We started 2010 off with a little thank-you to a few our clients in the form of cupcakes. These tasty treats are the handy work of Lyndsay at Coco Cake – a local cupcakery (is that a real word?!), and are our way of saying, ‘clients, you sure helped to make 2009 a swell year!’
Interestingly, we’ve learnt that cupcakes do not ship well. One batch only barely made it to its destination in Saskatchewan.
The Engine team added some strategic muscle with new hire Lewis Zimmerman who brings to the agency a solid yet diverse skill set covering design, development, and start ups. As he puts it “I’m curious about Art, Technology and Economics. Politically, you’ll find me postmodern.”
Lewis will be filling a new hybrid role, covering both Strategic Planning and Development of interaction and functional applications, both web and mobile, including client work as well as internal platforms that the agency is currently developing for internal use and public release.
Lewis holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance with an elective concentration in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia, where he graduated on the Dean’s List with Honours and a 4.15 GPA. Beyond technical planning and development, Lewis also has a long history with user interface design and user interaction.
Making internet makes us hungry, and being the time of year when a lot of food comes around the studio, the Holiday Season is usually a time of good eating (and good internet too.) We’re also really into Norwegian Death Metal, as you learned in our previous holiday surprise. However, things were a little dry last week. No food baskets, cheese plates, or fruit cakes. Nuthin?! So when the lovely ladies at Sara Pereira dropped off a ginger bread house, we went a little crazy.

The basketball court in the new Woodward's complex.
With rumors of possible free hotdogs and the need for more X-Box controllers, the Engine crew decided to duck out of the studio for an hour to size up our new neighbor, the Woodward’s development.
Freshly opened to the public, we finally got a chance to see what’s been going on behind that metal fence for the past few years since they blew up the whole block. The architecture of the complex fits in nicely with Gastown’s industral vibe. The main courtyard, with a glass roof and a huge open area that features a basketball court in between a London Drugs and Nestor’s, is a unique touch that’s going to see a lot of local rivalry manifesting itself next summer. There’s a huge photo installation by Stan Douglas that overlooks everything too, a nice nod to the political battle that is an undeniable part of this locations history. (More photos after the jump.)
