There’s a lot of debate over Flash relevance lately, with Apple making a big statement by excluding the ubiquitous platform from its iPad, iPod, and iPhone devices. But the demand from marketers (and consumers), as noted in the recent SoDA Digital Marketing Outlook report, says otherwise.

We say meh! Flash is here to stay. So we’re building up our Flash team with the recent addition of Senior Flash Developer, Daniel Butler, straight from London’s Agency Republic where he held the title Creative Technologist, working for a wide range of clients including Mercedes-Benz, PlayStation, O2, BBC, MTV, Green & Black’s, The UK Government, and EA Games. His work has been widely recognized by global advertising award shows where he’s taken home honors including a Bronze Cannes Cyber Lion, Webby, FWA, and D&AD yellow pencil.

Daniel brings a solid ability for developing smart efficient ActionScript while keeping an eye on process. At Engine Digital he’ll work in both of these areas, while working with the creative team to build smart brand engagements and branded utility. Leading our Flash dev team, he’ll build efficiencies while leveraging new and emerging technology. We’re just happy to have another cool accent in the studio.

Being of the adventurous sort, we’d like to take this opportunity to unveil our new travel blog! Since so many of our dear Engineers are often out of the studio on various sojourns throughout the globe, we decided to build a fun, light-hearted way of tracking their EVERY MOVE. It’s a Tumblr and it’s easily updatable via mobile.

We’ll be putting it to good use immediately in Austin, TX for SXSW! Just think, right from the comfort of your home or desk you’ll be able to watch Engine Digital hobnob with the superstars of the internet, attend an endless stream of parties, and witness technological advancements that will change the world as we know it, all under the wonderfully arid Austin lone star sky. It wasn’t easy to find volunteers to accept this task, but we’ve assembled a team and we’re on our way.

It’s called HBWT! or Have Blog Will Travel. Please follow it so we don’t miss our home too much.

Before we begin please put your headphones on and press play on the above video.

Good times here at Engine Digital H.Q. in Gastown! We just found out that Engine Digital has been named to the “Biggest Ad Agencies in Metro Vancouver” list by Business In Vancouver Magazine. Check out the current issue here.

We’re also in the midst of full on Olmypic fever since the horn in the harbour just signaled more gold for Canadian Maelle Ricker in Women’s Snowboard Cross.

What a great afternoon. We’ve got the Daft Punk on while working hard at getting to the top of that list, and we’re cheering on Canada for more gold!

Art & Copy: A Look Into The Ad Business

I had the chance tonight to attend a screening of the recently released Art & Copy documentary presented by BCAIM as part of Advertising Week. This is at times a humorous yet down to earth look inside the advertising business, from the perspectives of some of the biggest names in the agency world.

The film provides the context for advertising as we know it today, touching upon the space that the craft fills in modern culture. Some of the familiar subjects include industry icons including the blunt and animated George Lois, the man behind the idea of ‘The Big Idea’, Dan Wieden & David Kennedy of Just Do It fame, Jeff Goodby & Rich Silverstein, creators of the Got Milk? campaign, Hal Riney the creator of the classic american dream styled television spot, and Lee Clow, who’s work includes the much lauded 1984 spot for Apple and pretty much every campaign for that brand ever since Steve Jobs returned to steer the ship.
